Featured Map: Korean Air's 747-8I Intercontinental Routes
Last week, Korean Air reported the sale of five Boeing 747-8I Intercontinental aircraft to Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC) for $674 million, to be delivered by September 2025. Although the reason for the transaction was not disclosed, last month the U.S. Air Force awarded a $13-billion contract to Sierra Nevada Corp. to develop a successor to the E-4B Nightwatch, the Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) colloquially known as the Doomsday plane, so it's expected that these five aircraft will provide the cores of the replacements for E-4B aircraft (which are based on the Boeing 747-200B).
Korean Air's fleet currently includes 16 examples of the Boeing 747-8 including seven 747-8F cargo aircraft and nine 747-8I Intercontinental passenger aircraft.
Today's Featured Map illustrates where Korean Air currently flies the passenger version of this aircraft, all from Korean's hub at Seoul: twice-daily flights to New York (JFK) (teal) and daily flights to Atlanta and Paris (red). Korean Air has also occasionally flown these aircraft on other routes including to Singapore, Tokyo, and Taipei (white), though these fligths appear to be substitutions for other aircraft.
The New York and Atlanta flights require over 24 hours for the round-trip (the Paris round-trip can be done in one day) so this schedule requires more than the four aircraft that will remain after five aircraft are turned over to Sierra Pacific. Korean also flies the Airbus A380 to New York but has already retired one of these aircraft and currently has two others parked, so it's likely that once more than half of the 747-8I fleet has departed some of these heavy flights will be taken over by the Boeing 777-300ER, the next-largest aircraft in Korean's fleet.
